Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils For Babies Under Two
The only oils that are safe to use on babies under two years of age are Young Living therapeutic grade essential oils. No other brand measures in quality or safety.
With this being said, we recommend using only nineteen of their essential oil products on babies. Click on the bottle below to find the benefit for your little one.
Avoid direct sunlight with the following Bergamot, Ginger, Lemon and Orange. Babies have a much thinner, more delicate skin than adults, and tend to be very sensitive to the potency of essential oils. ALWAYS dilute oils for babies, at minimum 1 drop essential oil to 30 drops carrier oil. Do not ever use eucalyptus, basil, juniper, peppermint (reduces milk supply if nursing), hyssop and wintergreen essential oils around your baby under two. A small amount of essential oil goes a long way; more is not always better.
Before using any essential oil, ensure there are no allergic reactions by always skin testing the oil first. For babies and children, the feet are a great place to start. Don’t use essential oils around the time of vaccinations. Always consult a doctor for approval or seek medical advice if any conditions arise.
What are Essential Oils?
Essential Therapeutic Grade Oils, are known as nature's living energy. These oils come from natural, aromatic volatile liquids found in shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes and seeds.
In their natural state, these distinctive components in essential oils assist the life of the plant against insects, environmental conditions and disease. They are also vital for the plant to grow, thrive, evolve and adapt to its surroundings. Essential oils are extracted from aromatic plant sources via steam distillation and are highly concentrated and far more potent than drying the plant to make herbs.
While essential oils are known for having a pleasant aroma, their chemical makeup and biological structure makes them much more than something that smells good.
History of Essential Oils
Throughout history there have been thousands of references to essential oils usages. They are considered mankind's first medicine and have been used around the globe for centuries.
- There are 200 references alone to aromatics, incense and ointments in the bible. Precious oils such like Frankincense, Myrrh, Rosemary, Cassia and Cinnamon were used for the anointing and the healing of the sick.
- Ancient Egyptians were the first to discover the potential of fragrance, and records demonstrate that oils and aromatics were used for treating illness as well as performing rituals dated back to 45000BC.
- The Chinese priests and physicians used oils thousands of years before the time of Christ. Essential oils are used today still in Chinese herbal medicine.
- Today, essential oils were reintroduced in the late 19th century. Young Living Essential Oils, the leading provider of essential oils, offer more than 300 essential oil singles and blends. All Young Living Essential Oils meet the YLTG standard. This means that every essential oil Young Living distils or sources has the optimal naturally-occurring blend of constituents to maximize the desired effect.
Where are Essential Oils Sourced From?
There are four ways oils are extracted from plants. They are steam distillation, cold pressing, resin tapping or absolute extraction. Depending on what plant oil is required depends on which method is used.
The most common method to extract essential oils is through steam distillation. The proper process of steam distillation is to pass the steam through the plant material and condensing the steam to separate the oil from the plant. Proper temperature must be maintained throughout the distillation process. Pressure, length of time, equipment, and batch size are strictly monitored. This ensures that the naturally occurring compounds contained in each essential oil product are of the highest and most consistent bioactive levels. The steam is then cooled, leaving a mixture of oil and water. The oil separates from the water and floats to the top.
The second method is cold pressing. This method is to extract citrus or fatty oils such as olive, coconut, avocado and almond. A heavy weight is placed on top of the plant matter. Oil is then pressed out.
The third method is resin tapping. This method is only used to extract Frankincense, Myrrh and Copaiba. Resin is tapped out of the tree. The resin is then steamed to extract out the essential oils.
The fourth and last method of extracting oils is through absolute extraction. This method is only used for Jasmine and Neroli. Due to its fragile nature, this plant matter cannot be distilled with steam. A solvent is used alternatively.
The key to producing a quality essential oil is to preserve the delicate compounds of the aromatic plant through expert distillation.
How do Essential Oils Work?
Our body absorbs essential oils quickly and easily through smell. Research has shown that it takes twenty two seconds for the essential oil to affect our brain. How so? When you breathe in the odour molecules of the essential oil, the olfactory bulb transmits impulses to the limbic system. The limbic system in the brain is responsible for survival instincts, emotions and memory, which indirectly control blood pressure, heart rate and stress levels. Twenty Two seconds is all it takes to change our physiology and emotion through the use of essential oils.
Research has also shown that when essential oils are applied to the skin, absorption into the blood system through osmosis occurs within two minutes. Once in the blood system every cell in your whole body will be reached within 20minutes.
So it’s more than a pretty smell, essential oils can benefit your baby as well. Essential oils can be used to make an all-purpose cleaner for change tables, baby oils for massage, nappy rash cream and baby wipes.
Why use Young Living Essential Oils?
There are four standards known as grades in the world of essential oils. The therapeutic grade, organic essential oils, extended or altered oils and synthetic oils.
Synthetic oils are made in a factory laboratory and have zero living plant matter in them. They are not be to be used on the skin or consumed. They may smell like natural oils but have little to no significance to the health and wellbeing of our bodies.
Extended or Altered Oils are just fragrances used in household or beauty products that you can buy from the supermarket. They can not be used directly on skin and definitely not consumed either. They have very little real plant matter and are still predominantly synthetic. These make up 95% of essential oils on the market and are mainly used as air fresheners, scented candles, perfumes and cleaning items. With no essential oil labelling laws in Australia you can buy ‘organic’ or ‘pure’ oils that are just extended or altered oils.
Organic Essential oils that are found in health food stores are made out of natural plant material but may or may not pass therapeutic standards in Australia. Some of these oils are still only able to be used in diffusers and not directly on skin, inhaled or consumed.
Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils pass therapeutic standards and can be used directly on skin or inhaled. There 35 therapeutic grade essential oils that can also be consumed in Australia. All therapeutic oils that are organically made from plant matter are chemical free.
With such a high commitment to purity, Young Living aims to produce therapeutic grade essential oils that are transforming millions of peoples lives worldwide. What is Seed to Seal?
Seed to Seal is the process which Young Living uses to ensure their product meets standards to be a Therapeutic Grade Essential Oil. There are quality control checks along the whole process to ensure that all bottles are sealed with 100% beneficial natural goodness. There are five steps to the seed to seal process.
The first step in the Seed to Seal process is to ensure that the highest level of organic bioactive seeds are used to eventually grow into plants.
The second step is to ensure these seeds are cultivated organically without chemical pesticides and fertilisers. There are 13 young living farms worldwide. They have quality assurance checks and are responsible to sustainably grow and harvest quality plants.
The third step is to extract the Essential Oils from plant matter using one of the four extraction methods already mentioned. Distillation is chemical free and is vigorously control through correct temperature and pressure to ensure all biological components of the plant stay intact.
The fourth step of seed to seal is testing of the Essential Oils. Young Living first use in-house testing then third party laboratories to ensure their oils and blends meets Therapeutic standards that can be used in a variety of ways.
The fifth and final step is the sealing of the oil into bottles. The company is transparent. You can experience seed to seal by visiting any of the young living farms. They host many farming and harvesting events year round. You can see the distillation process first hand and can help plant or harvest tress.
How to drop essential oil from the bottle
It’s pretty simple. All you need to ensure is you don’t touch the top of the bottle, as you don’t want to cross contaminate. Keep the lid clean. If you hold up the bottle to eye height you can also count how many drops you use for each application.
Where to start?
With over 150 oils produced by Young Living, where do you start? We recommend using the Premium Starter Kit for common baby solutions. This kit is not only value for money but is highly versatile in use from helping colic, to the common cold and also guiding your baby into better sleeping patterns.
If you are completely new to oils then most people start off by exploring the ‘starter collection’. There are 11 of the most popular and widely used Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils in this collection. They are peppermint, Thieves, PanAway, Frankincense, Stress Away, Purification, DiGize, Lemon, Lavender, RC and Copaiba.
It’s also a whole lot cheaper to buy the premium starter kit than buying each of these bottles separately. The price of oils also varies depending on what it is and how much plant matter was used in each bottle. For example it takes 75 lemons to create 15ml of Lemon Therapeutic Grade Essential Oil. On average 1-2 drops are needed per application. This means from every 5ml bottle you get 50-100 applications.
If you buy the Young Living Premium Starter Kit through me, I also provide you with ongoing support, help and giveaways through a private Facebook group to share how to use your oils and ways to share with your family and friends, I also set you up with your own young living account where you can join their amazing rewards program and show you how to buy your oils at wholesale prices on all future purchases instead of paying full retail price.
My advice is learn how to use the oils for your baby and also for your personal wellness, purpose and abundance in the starter collection first, then add on new oils as you start learning new ways to use your oils.
